Emergency Contraception Service

Emergency Contraceptive Pill

If you’ve had unprotected sex, or your usual method of contraception has failed, you might be worried about becoming pregnant. One of the options available to you may be the morning after pill, which works by preventing or delaying ovulation.

Though often called the morning after pill, it can actually be taken up to five days after unprotected sex, depending on which type of pill you take. The sooner you take the morning after pill, the greater the chances of avoiding pregnancy.

The morning after pill is intended for emergency use and shouldn’t be used on a regular basis.

If you need the morning after pill immediately

The emergency hormonal contraceptives available at Graham Young Pharmacy are for women who’ve had unprotected sex within the last five days. Simply pop into Graham Young Pharmacy as soon as possible to have a friendly, reassuring and confidential chat with one of our pharmacists. They’ll be able to advise you on your emergency contraceptive options, as well as offer any help or support you may need.

How I can get emergency contraception?

Microsuction Wax Removal

Microsuction is the process of removing wax from your ears by using a small suction tube and probe to gently remove any excess wax in the ear.

What is earwax?

Naturally produced in the ear canal, earwax moisturises and protects them from dust, germs, irritation and even insects. Most people don’t need to remove it because our ears are ‘self cleaning’ – earwax moves from part way down the canal to the outside of your ear naturally.

Some people can have problems with excess earwax, or it may get stuck in their ears. In these cases, people can suffer from discomfort or reduced hearing and can benefit from having the earwax removed. Our earwax removal service is a safe, effective way of sorting these issues.

What is ear microsuction?

Microsuction is one of the best ways to remove earwax. Once our trained advisers have assessed your ear canal, they’ll use a gentle suction device to remove any earwax blockages.

This suction device acts like a vacuum cleaner, helping to loosen and remove any impacted earwax. Once the procedure is over, we’ll use a microscope to check over your ears.

Previously, using an ear syringe with water was a common way to get rid of earwax, however microsuction is a quick and much safer method.

How much does it cost?

We charge £50 for one or both ears. And if we don’t find any wax, we’ll complete a full ear health check, which costs £20.

How can I book an appointment?

Book an appointment by speaking directly with the pharmacy team. They can provide you with information on the availability of appointments, the length of the appointment, and any preparation needed before your visit.

Alternatively you can book online:

Community Pharmacy Consultation Scheme with referrals from GP Practices

We are working with neighbouring General Practice services to see if they can support people in a better way. Your GP can refer you to us and we will follow clinical guidelines to work out if we can help give you advice and explain what can be done to help you. This helps your GP practice to concentrate on more complex conditions and also gives us some much-loved opportunity to speak to and help people.

Pharmacists have training and lots of expertise on medications and how they can help with minor illnesses. We will do our best to help and advise you, however, if we can’t we will liaise back with your GP service to get their help and support.

We would love your feedback as this will help us to understand how helpful you find this service. Since we began we have helped hundreds of patients!

Community Pharmacy Consultation scheme from NHS 111 and NHS 111 Emergency medication service

In addition to being referred by your GP Practice, you may be referred to us by the NHS 111 services for minor illness ans also if you run out of your regular medication, for provision of emergency supplies while you are waiting for your GP to supply you with more medication

Please see below for some frequently asked questions about this new service.

When you call the practice, you will be asked about your symptoms. If they indicate that you can best be helped by a pharmacist, you will be offered a same day private consultation with a local community pharmacist. By prior arrangement, if your symptoms are such that you need to be seen by a member of your staff at the GP Practice, we will be able to book you an appointment directly with them.

Community pharmacists have already successfully seen thousands of patients for a consultation for a minor illness, following a call to NHS 111. This new way of arranging consultations with the pharmacist by a GP practice, has been successfully piloted around the county.

Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals and experts in medicines. They can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for all sorts of minor illnesses, and a same day consultation can be arranged quickly and at a time to suit you.

This in turns frees up GP appointments for those people with more complex symptoms who really need to see a GP.

We will share your personal details with the pharmacist and details of your minor illness and the pharmacist will contact you to arrange your consultation on the same day, or at a time that suits you.

You will have telephone consultation first and if needed, may be seen in person in a private consulting room if the pharmacist thinks it appropriate. You will be asked about your medical history and symptoms and current medication, in the same way the GP would ask you about them.

Usually, the pharmacist will provide you with advice and can recommend an over the counter product where needed, if you choose. They will also send details of your consultation back to the GP for their records.

If the pharmacist feels you need to be seen by a GP urgently, they will call the GP Practice to ensure you are seen, or they will advise you to contact the hospital Emergency Department if deemed necessary.

Your pharmacist will provide you with advice on how to treat your symptoms, which may include a medicine or product. Medicines that can be purchased in a pharmacy to treat minor illnesses, are usually not expensive and would not normally be prescribed by your GP anyway. You are free to choose if you wish to make a purchase or not.

We want to ensure that you are offered an appointment with the most appropriate qualified health care professional based on your symptoms. If you have minor illness symptoms that can be treated the same day through a consultation with a qualified community pharmacist, but do not want to accept this referral, you will be offered a routine appointment with your General Practice clinicians at a future date for minor illnesses this may be a member of their nursing team.

Children aged over one years are eligible to use this service and can be seen by the pharmacist. Children who are able to make their own decision about their health may be seen unaccompanied but this will be assessed by the pharmacist.

Community pharmacies are local, often open longer hours than the GP practices and can offer you the same support at a time that can be more convenient for you. If the pharmacist thinks you need to see someone from the GP team, they can help arrange an urgent appointment for you.

Patients who have already used the service liked the convenience of having a consultation on the same day, or a day that suited them, at a pharmacy of their choice. Across the country about 78% of people who had a consultation with a community pharmacist were successfully helped and very positive about the experience. This also helps our team of pharmacists develop with many of them explaining that they thoroughly enjoy having this as part of their job.

New Medicine Service (NMS)

We have an amazing service where we will follow up new medicines started by your GP or the hospital. This helps check you are getting on okay but also support you to know what to expect when starting medicines.

People often have problems when they start a new medicine. As part of the scheme, our pharmacist will support you over several weeks to use the medicine safely and to best effect.

The service is available for most but not all medicines but even if not available we are still happy to advise you – just ask to speak to one of our pharmacists.

Who is eligible

The New Medicine Service is only available for people living in England who have been prescribed a new medicine for these conditions:

How do I join the scheme?

When you come to collect your new prescription from us, ask the pharmacist if you can take part in the New Medicine Service or simply ask for some advice on the new medicine you are collecting.

Our Computer alerts us when you are prescribed a new item and it is eligible for the scheme. We identify your dispensed medication so when the prescription is scanned prior to it being handed over, added to our 24/7 dispenser, or sent as a delivery, the information helps the Pharmacist to identify the need to talk to you to make sure you understand the new medication. You may receive a telephone call if you have not collected items in person so you do not miss out this very important service.

How does the service work?

Starting your new medicine

You can talk to the pharmacist when you first start taking your medicine and ask any questions you may have about it. For example, you might want to know about side effects or how you can fit your treatment around your lifestyle.

Your second appointment

You’ll have a follow-up appointment on the phone 2 weeks later, when you and your pharmacist can talk about any issues you might have experienced with the medicine. For example, if you’re not taking it regularly or are finding a tablet hard to swallow, your pharmacist can help you get back on track and work with you to find solutions to any issues.

Your third appointment

You will have your last appointment a further 2 weeks later, when you can catch up with your pharmacist again to see how you’re getting on. The service then ends, but your pharmacist will always talk to you about your medicines when you need help.

Do I have to talk about my medicines over the counter in the pharmacy?

We have private consultation area. This is a separate room where you cannot be overheard. All the discussions with your pharmacist can take place in person or by phone.

How long will each appointment take?

The appointments are designed to fit around you and will last as long as you need.

Do I have to pay?

No. This service is free through the NHS.

NHS Community Pharmacy Hypertension case finding and Blood Pressure Check Service

We would like to offer you free blood pressure check ups!

The service is designed for those that are over 40s, or over 30’s with risk factors (such as a family history or obesity) to find those not yet diagnosed with high blood pressure or for those identified by their GP for example those who are not coming in for checks or prefer our opening times or access. We are also happy to do a blood pressure check for anyone who asks us for it as part of our service.

We have the facility for Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) when your blood pressure appears to be higher than normal.

ABPM tests your blood pressure regularly over 24 hours, by using a cuff attached to a portable device that’s worn on your waist.

You can continue with your daily activities during this time.

We will fit you with the device that will measure your blood pressure at home and arrange for you to return the next day to get a report which will indicate whether your blood pressure is within the normal range or you need to see your GP for further management.

The aim of monitoring and giving you feedback on your blood pressure is that by detecting uncontrolled blood pressure we could reduce your risk of heart attacks and strokes . We inform GPs of all blood pressure check results for continuity of care. If your blood pressure is high, your GP will be informed the same day.

If your GP has referred you we might have booked you into one of our clinics.

Needle Exchange Service

We provide a needle exchange service where intravenous drug users can obtain clean sterile needles and syringes and safely dispose of used needles and syringes.

This service is designed to prevent people sharing or re using needles. It also reduces drug related harm and the transmission of blood borne bacterial and viral infections such as hepatitis B and C or HIV.

To maintain dignity and confidentiality, we have a private room.  Please report to reception and they will direct you to the room. The service is led by our Pharmacist in a non-judgemental manner and may lead to the user being referred to an appropriate drug treatment programme i.e. opioid substitute treatment in order to stop drug usage. Our Pharmacist can also advise on minimising the harms caused by drugs and suggest further support and help. The pharmacist may also offer you a mini health check to ensure your wellbeing.

Private Consultation Rooms

We have consultation rooms at our pharmacy where you can discuss private or personal issues. If you want to discuss any health issues which are not ideal to be discussed in the reception area, please ask at reception for a consultation and brief information of the topic you wish to discuss. Examples of situations that patients typically ask us about include hair loss, problems getting or maintaining an erection and problems relating to the menopause. Where we can help we will, but if it’s a problem that you need to see your GP practice about we will let you know. There are medicines that can help these conditions and more that are available for you to purchase.
